WHEN TO BOOK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

How far in advance should you book a photographer in Melbourne's south east?

It depends on the type of session, but the short answer is: earlier than you think.

Lifestyle and portrait sessions

For a lifestyle or portrait session, two to four weeks is usually enough lead time, assuming the date you want is available. Weekends book faster than weekdays, and late afternoon slots go first because the light is better. If you have a specific date in mind, it's worth reaching out sooner rather than waiting.

Family sessions around school holidays

School holiday periods are consistently the busiest time for family lifestyle shoots. Parents want to capture the kids while they're together, relaxed, and not in uniform. If you're planning a session during the April, July, or September school holidays, aim to book at least four to six weeks ahead.

Events

For birthdays, corporate events, and other occasions, six to eight weeks ahead is a reasonable minimum. This gives enough time to confirm the details, sort the agreement, and make sure the date is locked in properly.

Weddings

Wedding photography is a different conversation. Popular dates in spring and autumn can book out twelve months or more in advance. If you've set a date, it's worth contacting photographers early, even if everything else is still being planned.

What happens if you leave it late?

Sometimes it works out. Cancellations happen, and not every date fills up. But if the date matters to you, the safest move is to secure it as soon as you can. A booking isn't confirmed until the agreement is signed and the reservation fee is paid — so even an initial enquiry is worth making early.
